KWILA
is a tropical hardwood that is found throughout South East Asia, and is
the material of choice for outdoor furniture in Australia and New Zealand.
Kwila is a straight-grained wood with a dark brown colour similar to walnut.
Kwila has a hardness factor of 8.6 making it one of the strongest and
most durable outdoor timbers in the world. The high oil content of Kwila
wood makes it weather resistant and pest resistant while its high density
and hardness make it perfect for garden furniture.
It is yellowish-brown or orange-brown when first cut turning darker with
age to a deep reddish brown. The texture is coarse but even and the grain
may be straight or interlocked and is often wavy.
Kwila seasons well with kiln drying, with little degrade and very little
shrinkage. Kwila timber has a natural oil content that further enhances
its durability.
Products made from Kwila timber can be left out in the weather permanently.
